About OUT NYC

The essential guide to LGBTQ+ life in New York City — built for the community, by people who love this city.

Why OUT NYC Exists

New York City is the LGBTQ+ capital of the world. It has been for over fifty years — since the summer of 1969 when the patrons of the Stonewall Inn sparked a movement that changed everything. The city's queer community is enormous, extraordinary, and constantly evolving.

OUT NYC exists to be the guide we all wish we'd had when we first arrived. Whether you're a lifelong New Yorker rediscovering your city, a newcomer trying to find your footing, or a visitor who wants to experience gay New York the way it's actually lived — this is your resource.

We cover all five boroughs, not just Manhattan. We cover the storied dives of the West Village and the experimental art spaces of the Bronx. We cover the Latin LGBTQ+ community of Jackson Heights, the lesbian heartland of Park Slope, and the queer performance world of Bushwick. New York's gay community is not one neighborhood — it's an entire city.

We keep things current, specific, and honest. We don't list places that have closed. We don't pretend a bar is the right fit for everyone. We give you real information so you can make your own decisions about where to spend your time and money in the greatest city on Earth.

What We Cover

Nightlife & Bars

Dance clubs, gay bars, lesbian bars, leather bars, piano bars, dives, and rooftop lounges — every LGBTQ+ venue worth knowing, organized by neighborhood and vibe.

Drag & Performance

NYC's drag scene is the planet's most competitive and creative. We cover drag brunches, dinner shows, bar performances, competitions, and everything in between.

Neighborhoods

Deep dives into every LGBTQ+ neighborhood — history, vibe, where to eat, where to drink, where to live. From Hell's Kitchen to Jackson Heights and beyond.

Events

Weekly parties, annual events, Pride season, circuit parties, community gatherings, and cultural events — your guide to what's actually happening in gay NYC.

Arts & Culture

Museums, galleries, Broadway, off-Broadway, LGBTQ+ film festivals, literary events, and the deep cultural roots that make queer New York so extraordinary.

Community Essentials

Healthcare providers, community centers, housing resources, legal organizations, sports leagues, and crisis support — because gay life is about more than nightlife.

Our Promise

All Five Boroughs. Proportionally.

We take the full city seriously. Manhattan has the density and the history — Hell's Kitchen, West Village, Chelsea, and the East Village are among the gayest neighborhoods on the planet, and they deserve their prominence. But gay New York doesn't stop at the bridges and tunnels.

Brooklyn's LGBTQ+ scene — particularly in Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Park Slope — is massive, diverse, and home to some of the city's most innovative queer spaces. Jackson Heights in Queens hosts one of the most vibrant Latin LGBTQ+ communities anywhere in the United States. The Bronx is underrepresented in guides like this one, and we're working to change that. Staten Island has Alice Austen House, the ferry, and a community that deserves to be seen.

We reflect reality: roughly 60% of our content is Manhattan-focused because that's where the concentration of venues is. But we're committed to giving the other boroughs their due weight and respect.
